Mike Masnick – No Music Tax !

Been following TechDirt for a few years now, and I believe he is square on the money on this one !

Techdirt founder Mike Masnick has followed the twists and turns of the digital music debate for more than a decade, offering some of the most prescient and lucid information and arguments on the topic anywhere. Today he tackles growing calls for a voluntary music-licensing scheme, pushed most recently by Warner Music Group to universities, that would basically allow file sharing by having ISPs impose a surcharge on all users to be paid out to copyright holders. (A version of this has been done before with blank media like tape cassettes in some markets, including Canada, but this would be a massive expansion of the idea.)

TechDirt and its; republish on Wired

Really excited to see this getting picked up by Wired, for it puts the discussion one step closer to mainstream media, which in the end is where it needs to head to have more people engage in a public debate at large.

Girl Talk Mashup fer college credits

Professor Matthew Soar at Concordia University in Montréal, as a contribution to the Open Source Cinema Project, teamed with his students and spent what he describes as “three very intensive weeks rotoscoping a concert video” of Girl Talk. They were, he says, inspired by Bob Sabiston’s digital rotoscoping (Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly), and by Christine Harold’s OurSpace: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture, a textbook used for his communications course.

Philosophically, Raëlians oppose war and violence in all its forms. Raëlians frequently appear at anti-war rallies dressed as aliens (which seems incongruous since they say that aliens look like humans). Raëlians also embrace free love and nudity. They consider love to be the answer to virtually all of the world’s problems.

Who are the Raëlians? Most people have heard of them but few know much about them beyond some vague reference to space aliens or cloning. The Raëlians were founded in 1973, by a young French street musician, race car driver, and automotive journalist named Claude Vorilhon (please pardon my non-effort to pronounce that properly).

In December of that year, he was hiking around in the crater of an extinct volcano in France and claims to have been greeted by the sight of a flying saucer coming down and landing. A little alien came out and approached him. The alien looked like a short Japanese guy and fortuitously spoke French (French being the universal language, as we know). For an hour each day over six consecutive days, the alien, whose name was Yahweh, met with Vorilhon and explained the true history of the Earth.
Raëlian’s run seminars that have organized group exercises involving meditation with the senses and the seminars attract a diverse mix of sexually adventurous people.

Annual Raëlian seminars are usually a cross between a nudist camp and new-age retreat, filled with activities such as observations of one’s own private parts and masturbation, men and women crossdressing in fun and original plays and events including couples having sexual intercourse in tents.

Ya work would travel a path directly from my computer

I am an ambient music composer who is fascinated with di history of computer music. I have composed many albums of both ambient and experimental electronic music using a variety of synthesizers, samplers and outboard effects, but I have had dis ya interest in composing a piece of music that would be created entirely in di computer — no samplers, no analog synths, no external digital signal processing (dsp) and no drum machines — just my computer, a soundcard, a dat machine and I. dis ya work would travel a path directly from my computer straight ta di listener’s hiez, mediated ongle by an invisible layer of bits. when dis ya idea first germinated around a year and a half ago, I became more and more intrigued with it. my original plan was ta use turbosynth, protools and soundhack as some of my tools, but that plan was redirected by a meeting I had with a csound composer who helped inspire a radical change in my focus.

around di same time as that meeting, I was experiencing annada shift: I no longer felt compelled ta work in di techno ambient genre but instead wanted ta chart a different course. I wanted ta create work that drew upon my technical background in audio, my interest in computer languages and my readings in media criticism. while being pulled in dis ya oblique artistic direction, my interest in learning csound had been rekindled. it was not until I compiled a few csound examples, that I realized I had found di system that would help I accomplish my goals, and that csound would gi I access ta many different tools with which ta work. through mastering di fundamentals of csound I have finally been able ta sculpt ambient soundscapes in an environment made from beanie more an cold silicon and code.

I have been asked ta write an ambient csound piece for dis ya book and ta chronicle my progress. given my interest in grafting di synthesis techniques found in early computer music onto an emergent new sound in ambient music, dis ya project would help I develop my work in dis ya area, while having an interesting journey ta share with others who are being introduced ta csound.
